Second Blog Entry
Why did Lee order the attack up Little Round Top? Why wasn’t the attack successful? What should Lee have done at that point?

Who is your favorite character? Why?

This response needs to be only 1 paragraph. There will be two more blogs after this -- we will wrap this up during finals week. PS -- there will be questions from the novel Killer Angels on your final.

Response to this must be posted by next Tuesday (December 23)

Early and Ewell think the Union troops are too concentrated on Cemetery Hill and Culp’s Hill for them to attack successfully. But they suggest to Lee that they can attack the left of the Union front like with Longstreet’s men on Little Round Top and possibly Cemetery Ridge. This tactic might draw off enough troops to attack Cemetery Ridge and Culp’s Hill. This didn’t work however because they found out there were troops in the peach orchard, something they weren’t expecting. Another reason it did not work was because Stuart, a man they expected to be there to give the Confederates the position of the Union line, to accurately give them the Union position. Therefore, Lee had to guess where the Union line might be and they marched to it blindly.
In my opinion Lee should have retreated behind the Union troops and cut them off from Washington.
My favorite person probably is Chamberlain. He is not afraid of war and he does not make stupid decisions. He is in the war for the right reasons; to free men. He also is very valiant. I can support this because when his troops ran out of ammunition he ordered a bayonet charge back down the hill. This pushed Confederate troops off the Hill and guaranteed Union victory on Little Round Top. I also believe this to be a huge turning point in the war for the Union.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he did not feel comfortable attacking anywhere else without being defeated. This does not work because of unknown Union troops. A Confederate told Lee incorrectly so Lee and his troops were not prepared. At this point, Lee should have retreated to get more troops so he could fight this Union army. My favorite character is probably Longstreet because he is determined and stays focused on the war.

The main reason why Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Hill was because he felt a sense of weakness. Geary had pulled his men out too soon, meaning that most of the hill was undefended. Lee knew that if he could attack the south side and take over the hill, the whole of the union line would become indefensible. A reason why the attack was unsuccessful was because it took Lee almost the whole day to gather his troops together. Another reason why the attack was unsuccessful was because of Colonel Vincent. He intercepted a message for help, and quickly led 1, 350 men to the left flank, telling them to defend it at all costs. Without his swift actions, the lack of union men on the left flank would have proved disastrous. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he was not fighting the war for money or power. He made it very clear that he was fighting for the rights of men. He looked forward to a day when everyone was given the same opportunity. He was also a quick thinker and he devised good strategy under intense pressure.

There are many reasons why General Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top, but the main reason was that he felt that the Union would be weak there. He also figured that if he attacked on the extreme left flank of the Union, he could take the hill and the Union forces, therefore, the Union line would become vulnerable. The reason this attacked failed was because General Lee was attacking a position that he had no information of. This was because J.E.B. Stuart did not report back to Lee about the Union’s position. Another reason was the Union’s determination to hold that line. Chamberlain was told that he could NOT retreat what ever happened because it would give the Confederates access to Little Round Top. General Lee should have retreated while they could that way they could attack the Union without wasting all the troops that died in the charge. My favorite is Chamberlian for many reasons. One is that he is brave and does not give up even with the odds against him, and can make intelligent decisions in tight situations. He also understands the true meaning of the war, freeing other people.

Lee ordered an attack at Little Round Top to show the Union commanders that the Confederacy was willing to wage direct, offensive war. Lee felt that the Rebel army could defeat the Union, despite their disadvantages. Lee also believed Early and Ewell when they told Lee that the left had been heavily armored during the night, suggesting that Longstreet attack on the hill. This tactic would likely draw the Union away from the left, leaving it open for an attack. However, this approach did not work because the Confederates went into the battle with inaccurate information. Stuart was partially responsible for the faulty information for not properly scouting the Union army. As a result, Lee went into battle not knowing that the Union troops were actually positioned where the Confederates were planning to attack. Lee should have then listened to Hood and Longstreet, by retreating, and positioning themselves behind the Union army, separating them from Washington. My favorite character is Chamberlain because of his views, determination and courage during battle. Chamberlain does not judge the southern slaves by the color of their skin. He believes that they should be freed from slavery and should have the same rights as all Americans. Also, during the battle Chamberlain understands that his unit is the last line, and that the only way to send them back is to charge at them, terrifying the Rebels.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because if the Confederates could take that hill, then they could flank the entire Union army on the left side because Little Round Top was the end of the Union line as Colonel Vincent points out to Chamberlain, "You cannot withdraw...You must defend this place to the last." So, if Lee could have flanked the Union army, the Battle of Gettysburg might have had a different outcome. There are many reasons that the attack did not work, but probably the most prominent was the fact that the Union had the high ground on a hill that was extremely steep and rocky. Also, the Confederates were under the impression that the Union troops were scared and would run away if they came running up the hill at them. With the difficult terrain and the fact that the Union troops stood their ground, the Confederates had no chance at winning. In a way, this attack on Little Round Top for the Confederates was like Fredericksburg was for the Union. But, at this point, Lee should have taken Longstreet’s advice and retreat then swing around the Union in order to cut them off from Washington and to fight the defensive instead of the offensive. The only way for the Confederates to win the war was to fight defensively and make the Union attack them.
My favorite character is a tie between Chamberlain and Longstreet. Both men fight valiantly and are not afraid to be on the front line. While they are different sides of the line, they are both very similar. Both are fighting because it’s the right thing to do, but they might have different versions of what is the ‘right’ thing to do. Chamberlain thinks that everyone, even the blacks, are human beings and have a ‘divine’ spark and so they should be treated with respect. Longstreet is not fighting for or against slavery, but he is fighting for Virginia, for his people, for his home. Both these men fought valiantly and bravely not only at Gettysburg, but for the entirety of the war.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he believed the Union was weakest there. Chamberlain was the very end of the Union line and Lee believed this to be an advantage. But Lee's attack wasn't successful because he undermined the Union's strength there. The Confederates were also continuously running up a steep incline towards Chamberlain, which was a definite disadvantage. Lee should've heeded Longstreet's advice and headed around the Union and taken them from behind. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He courageously took the position on Little Round Top, knowing that he was the last line of the Union army. He also proved heroic in his bayonet charge, and received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top since he thought that the Confederates would have the advantage at this specific spot. It was not successful since Lee did not expect that there would be troups that he was unaware of. I think Lee should have swallowed his pride and retreated at this point, he would have saved a great deal of men doing this.
My favorite character is Chamberlain. I like his honestly and his strong morals portrayed in the novel. No matter what kind of trying situation he gets into, his morals and reason for fighting in the war reamain intact.

Maddie Herbert said...

The reason for Lee's order on Little Round Top was based on Lee's belief that they were weakest there. The attack, however, was not successful because he had little reason to believe that the Union would be strong at the end of the line. Also, from being placed at a steep hill, the Confederates were at a disadvantage. At that point in time, Lee should have retreated right then, and pulled his army around the Union line and attacked from behind. My favorite character is Chamberlain because of his heroism, strength, and skill to lead an entire army. Not only did he receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, but he made a quick, yet risky, decision to hold the line at Little Round Top, even though all of their lives were at stake.

Adam Lynch said...

The reasoning Lee used to attack Little Round Top was that the Union forces, they thought, were heavy at Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill. So Early and Ewell suggested to Lee that they swing around to the left and put Longstreet's men on Little Round Top. Lee wanted to do this to draw off troops from Cemetery Ridge and Culp's Hill. It did not work because there were infact Union troops on the left and the Confederates did not expect that. At this point in the battle Lee should have retreated to think of a new plan of attack rather than push forward and get slaughtered.
My favorite character is Longstreet because he is not afraid of war. He is willing to do anything to fight for what he believes in. He is a very deticated and determined man.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top to show that the Confederates were willing to attack the Union commanders under no circumstances. Even though the Confederates were under a great deal of disadvantages, they still believe they were able to defeat the Union. Since the left side had been taken cover by the Union, Longstreet moved his soldiers to attack on the hill. Longstreet’s idea was to force to Union to move from the left side, making it available for the Rebels to attack. But, with Stuart’s mistaken information, the Confederates attack was unsuccessful. In other words, Lee should have listened to Longstreet and attacked the Union army from behind and divided them from Washington. My favorite character would be Chamberlain. He has courage, and always fights with heart. He does not view other citizens of the country any different, including African Americans. Even though they are black, he believes the slaves shall be free and live like true Americans. Also Chamberlain always steps up to the challenge. When he is told he is the last line in the battle, and he can not surrender, his determination allows him to do what ever it takes to defeat the Confederates. He always steps up to the challenges no matter what the circumstances are. He will put himself on the front line if that is what it takes. In conclusion, Chamberlain does the right thing for the people and the country.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he felt that that area would be the weakest for the Union. He felt that if he attacked up the hill he would have been slaughtered. Instead he decided to attack around Little Round Top because it was the only chance he could have to defeat the Union and take the hill. His attack was unsuccessful because there were unknown Union troops at the part of the hill were he was attacking. Also the Union had the higher ground making it even more difficult for the Confederacy. At this point, Lee should have retreated. He would have saved many men’s lives that could have been useful in later battles. My favorite character is Chamberlain. Early in the book when he is speaking he says that he is fighting for the rights of men. He is not fighting just to show up the Confederacy. He has a point in fighting, and is fighting for what he believes in. Also he tries his best to think through decisions to make good choices. He does his best to defend what he believes in.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he believed it would be a great advantage to the Confederates since that is where the Union was the weakest. This plan of attack was a failure because Union troops were stationed there. They held strength and were determined to not let anyone cross the line. At this point, lead should have retreated and brought more troops in order to successfully fight he Union army. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He is fighting in the war for the right reasons. Chamberlain is not focused on gettting more regocnition then the Conferderacy, instead he is fighting for the rights of men. Chamberlain is willing to take a risk, and displays honor and courage throughout the novel.

Lee ordered the attack up on Little Round top, becauase a majority of the hill was undefended, and Lee felt weak. He did not feel that if they stayed where they were that they would be able to win. This attack was unsuccessful because Lee took too long to gather his troops. It also did not work because the attack tactic was interecpeted and they knew that they were being attacked and from where. When this happened, Lee should have stopped the attack or put together more troops. My favorite charactic is Chamberlain. He is my favorite character because he is a good leader. He is not afraid of the war. Also he is willing to sacrafice himself from something that he believes in. Many others would do this, but to me, it seems, that Chamberlain does it in a different way. He leads his troops the entire time and he cares for them. Chamberlain is not fighting for himself, but he is fighting for everyone else. In my eyes, Chamberlain is a good man. He is determines and a great leader.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he believed this was the point the union was weakest, and this was where he felt the most comfortable attacking and comming out with a victory. Lee was not completely informed though and did not realize the amount of union troops on top of the hill. The amount of union troops at the top of the hill rendered his attack unsuccessful. Instead of continiously attacking Lee should have retreated && tried somewhere else another day.
My Favorite character is Chamberlain because he stays focused on the task ahead and he is good at what he does. He isnt in the war for the money or the glory. he is in it for the rights of men.

Because the Union troops are too strong and collected on Cemetery Hill, Early and Ewell order Lee to attack the left side of the Union army along with Longstreet in order to distract and break up troops. The tactic was designed to take the Union by surprise so the Confederates can actually attack Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Ridge. However, unfortunately for the Confederates, there were unexpected Union soldiers prepared in the peach orchard for the arrival of the confederates. This blindness was caused by general Stuart because he was not prepared to give the other generals accurate information on the whereabouts of the Union army.
My favorite character throughout the novel is Chamberlain. Chamberlain seems to be the perfect leader. For instance, in the beginning of the book he gives an enlightening speech to the Maine men so that they will fight for the Union army. Throughout every battle Chamberlain was always there for an injured man, making sure he get proper medical attention. Chamberlain wasn’t just a benevolent leader he was also an intelligent one, always using the best tactics to win the battles.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top, because it was there only chance at victory in Gettysburg. The Union already had the high ground and Lee thought he had to break through the Confederate line. The attack was not succesful mainly because the Union had the high ground. Also, Lee did not realize how many men the Union had because he was ill informed. I think Lee should have retreated once he realized what the circumstances were. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He is brave and fights with his men. He is not afraid of battle and will do whatever it takes to win. Chamberlain is fighting the war for the rights of humans not for fame or glory. These qualities make him an excellent leader and an admirable character.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he felt this would be an easy battle and he could successful take the hill. The attack was a failure because Lee was unaware of Union troops in the area. If Stuart had not been joyriding, he would have had the enemy positions and been able to make a better decision and not walk into a battle blindly. Lee should have just fallen back at that point and regrouped because he then knew more of the enemy’s position. My favorite character is definitely Chamberlain because he is humble and brave. His bayonet charge was extremely dangerous but he had the courage to do it. He fights for a good reason and that is to free the slaves. Chamberlain is always with his men and has great respect for them.

General Lee ordered an attack on Little Round Top because he believed that the Union would reinforce other areas. This might have drawn Union forces from the left side. One reason for this decision was because he was misinformed by Stuart. In order to preserve his troops, Lee should have retreated from battle, leaving more troops to attack the Union elsewhere or flaked the Union army and taken it from a different side.
My favorite character from Killer Angels was Chamberlain. Although the Confederate Army was relentless and kept attacking, he never gave up and always knew what was best for his men.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he alleged that the Union army had disadvantages there. Despite this belief, the attack was unsuccessful because Lee was uninformed of the Union troops on the part of the hill they were attacking. The confederate troops were also at a steep part of the hill, being a huge disadvantage. Many of the Confederate men's lives could have been saved if Stuart would have informed Lee of the Union's position. Instead, Stuart was joyriding and Lee walked into the battle unknowingly. Lee should have retreated at this point and positioned his troops behind the Union army. My favorite character in this book is Chamberlain because of his views, morals, and honesty. Despite the situation he is in, Chamberlain lets his views and morals take over and decide for him. He believes that the slaves should be freed and he sticks to this belief. He knows what he is fighting for and he doesn't give up.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because Lee knew that every moment the Reb officers spent deliberating tactics, the Union troops were reinforcing themselves. He felt that with the extra time, Meade would “have time to swing round their artillery and [make it] a damn slaughter” (pg 189). Therefore, Lee attacked on the point in Union line that he felt was weakest, Little Round Top. One reason this attack failed was because Lee was unprepared for the Union troops that rested atop the hill, which J.E.B. Stuart failed to inform him of. In my opinion, Lee should have retreated those troops and reinforced troops in areas where victory was a more plausible feat. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He proves his bravery and his formidable determination during the battle on Little Round Top. In addition, he does not make hasty, foolish decisions; he thinks through his choices calmly and intelligently.

General Robert E. Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top due to the simple fact that he was scared. He felt like the hill Union hold of the hill was weak. Lee realized that if he could take the hill then his army could easily dispenese of the rest of the Union army. Lee was not sucessful due to the superior commanding by Union generals. In addition, Lee completely underestimated the size and power of the Union tropps on the hill. Once Lee realized he was defeated on after his first charge he should have retreated to fight another day. So far my favorite character would have to be General Chamberlin. Chamberlin is a very brave and smart commander. If he would rolled over and gave up the entire Union army would have collapsed. Chamberlin was in the war to fight for the rights of his people.

General Lee thought that the Union would be weak at Little Round Top, so he ordered the attack there. Lee thought the Rebel army could win against the Union. If the Confederates could take the end of the Union line, the hill, they could flank the Union army on the left side. Unfortunately for Lee his plan did not work because there were Union troops to the left that he did not expect. I think Lee should have admitted defeat early on instead of pushing forward when he knew defeat was coming. My favorite character in the book is Chamberlain. In the beginning of the book he speaks his intentions of not fighting for an army, but the rights of men; to set them free. He has honest and noble intentions for fighting and stands up for what he believes in. Chamberlain consistently displays honor, courage, and devotion throughout the entire novel.

Lee had no choice but to order an attack on Little Round Top due to the failures of his officers. They day prior to the attack, the Confederate army had a chance to take the hill peacefully without any struggle and gain some high ground at Gettysburg. He chose little round top because it was in the middle, he figured that they Union commanders would be expecting another attack on their sides, leaving the the middle undermanned and vulnerable. The men had to fight across steep and rocky terrain in order to win this battle, on that impossible to win. The attack was simply unsuccessful because of the amazing advantage that the Union soldiers had. They were very well dug in on the top of the hill behind rocks and other barriers while the Confederate men had to run up a steep slope with little or no cover. Lee should have continued to flank the Union lines, pushing them back. He should have also got between the Union lines and Washington DC, cutting them of from the President. My favorite character in this book would have to be Lawrence Chamberlain. Not only was he an outstanding leader and motivator, he was an extremely brave man fighting to free all of man. He had good values and led his men from the front, he did not stand back and give orders that he himself would not participate in.

Lee ordered the attack up little round top because he felt that he had no other choice. Lee felt that if he retreated, the troop’s moral would suffer. He also was of the opinion if that they did not attack soon the enemy, union army, would be too well dug in to be attacked. He should have listened to his generals more and routed around the hill like General Longstreet and others had suggested. It wasn’t a success because of the ridiculous amount of effort it took to storm a hill; they were using outdated military tactics that would not and did not work in the civil war era.
In the story, there are many characters that have compelling and interesting stories. However, I find that I relate more with Chamberlain. His actions are guided by his strong sense of morality; which leads him to fight for the union for a good cause. Also in the battle, Chamberlain impressed me with his prowess as a soldier and his canny ability to lead. His bravery earned him the Medal of Honor and my gratitude.

Lee believes that the Union troops will be weak at Little Round Top. Lee recieved insufficient information because Stuart never reported back to him. Lee might have thought the attack would draw other Union troops from other posts and allow the Confederates to push onward. But Union troops from the Orchard thwarted the attack. Lee had no idea what he was getting in to.
Lee should have retreated because he didn't know what he was getting in to. Lee was a good general with this being one of his few mishaps. He could have moved to a different route and attacked towards Washington or other major cities in the Northeast.
So far my favorite character is General Longstreet. He is determined to win the war. Longstreet is a patriot and isn't afraid to get in the action and on the front lines of the battles.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he thought this was the weakest part of the Union army. Ironically, this is where the Union troops were the strongest which is why it was a complete failure. Also, Lee had no knowledge of what was going on behind enemy lines because his “scout” J.E.B Stuart was out joyriding and left Lee blind. At this point, trying to overcome the Union’s strength should not have been an option for Lee. Rather, he should have retreated which would save more of his soldiers lives and allow him to gather more soldiers for a second attack.
My favorite character is Lawrence Chamberlain. Although he is alongside his brother Tom, Lawrence focuses on the well-being of his troops rather than making a name for his family. For example, he does not allow his brother to call him by his first name. He does this because he doesn’t want special privileges for his family opposed to how every other soldier is treated. Another Example is when he and his troops are virtually outnumbered and overpowered by the Confederacy on top off the hill. Rather than giving up, Chamberlain orders his men to charge the Confederacy which later earns him special recognition. These examples show that he is loyal and willing to die for his country rather than the sake of his family name.

Lee made the decision to attack based on both knowledgable information and fear. He was made aware of the "fishhook" formation of the Union Army that had not yet occupied Little Round Top by calvarymen Johnston and Clark, and assumed that since Meade had just taken command he would not advance or take any type of offensive position. On the other hand, he feared that every moment wasted not attacking presented an opportunity for the Union to reinforce troops, and was assured that he had no other choice but to attack. Ultimately, the attack wasn't successful because the en echelon strategy, combined with the a lack of knowledge of the roads due to Stuart being MIA, forced Longstreet's troops to move slowly and prevented them from being able to secure the hill before the Union Army. Instead, the Confederate troops were put at a huge disadvantage of crappy ground and a clear, vulnerable position fighting from the bottom of Little Round Top against Union men entrenched behind boulders. Needless to say, the Confederate Army lost, suffering a vast amount of casualties and boosting the morale of the Union soldiers. At this point, Lee should have realized that his plans tend to fail and that he should probably start taking Longstreet's advice, but he is under the wrong impression that the Confederates almost won the battle, so he refuses to give up. My favorite character is Buster Kilrain because although he is not the most intelligent or sophisticated of the soldiers, he seems to have the most insight as to what the war is actually about. He makes no preconceptions, holding tightly to his belief that each man is to be judged individually, and has a realistic view of the flaws of mankind. Unlike the others, Kilrain knows what he is fighting for and never questions his personal values or beliefs.

Lee decides to take a direct attack up Little Round Top because according to his belief, the union army would be the least concentrated there, and it was his best chance of not getting defeated. This attack does not go as plan because there are unknown troops at the top of this hill that prove to be too much for Lee at the end of the battle. My favorite charachter is undoubtedly Lee because although he fights for the south, he pours his heart and soul into this war, and give one-hundred and ten percent with every battle that he fights. He cares for his men, and believes in their well-being. He is almost like a father figure, and someone that all soldiers should look up to.

Lee ordered the Confederate troops to attack up Little Round top because he thought on that left side that was were the Union army would be the weakest. However, more union troops were sent to the left; therefore, they were ready, and the Confederates' plan failed. Instead of attacking up hill, which made his troops tired, Lee should have retreated and attacked the Union army from behind. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he not only is fighting against slavery, he is also a true gentleman. For example, he helped a black man that had been wounded during battle instead of letting him suffer. Also, instead of shooting the enemy during battle when their plan failed, he simply imprisoned them.

General Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top in order to gain the high ground, which was a great advantage in battle. He hoped to push the Union forces back by attacking them from their left side, the weaker side. The Union forces were not fully positioned on the left side of the hill for Gen. Sickles moved his forces too far away from the Hill, exposing the left side. Lee acknowledged this and wanted to attack immediately, but Gen. Longstreet waited for Hood and McLaw's forces to arrive, delaying the attack. This gave the Union forces a chance to settle into position on the Hill. At this time, Gen. Lee should have called off the attack or taken a defensive position, for he was fighting uphill.
My favorite character in the book so far is Mr. Kilrain because of his persistence and heart. In the book, Kilrain tells Col. Chamberlain why he is fighting the war, and he says it is for justice; to be treated as he deserves. Most men are fighting to defend their views on slavery, or just to prove they are better than the other side. Kilrain is different. He judges the men "one at a time," not as a whole.

Lee attacked Little Round Top because he thought that this was the weakest point of the Union Line. Since it was the far left flank, Lee thought it would be poorly staffed. Also, Ewell had given Lee word that Cemetery Hill and Culp’s Hill were heavily infiltrated with Union forces. IT had been JEB Stuart’s responsibility to tell Lee the exact positions of Union forces, and he failed to do this as he was joy riding through Pennsylvania. The Confederate troops were eventually blind sided by Union troops. Perhaps most important, however, was the fact that Chamberlain had direct orders from Vincent that his Twentieth Maine regiment must hold ground until the end. At this point, it probably would have been best for Lee to retreat with his remaining men. It was very obvious that they did not know the ground well enough, partly because they were in enemy territory, but mostly because of J.E.B. Stuart’s carelessness. Lee and his army should retreat to somewhere in Virginia where they are better equipped to make a good stand. My favorite character is General Lee, not so much for what he did in the battle of Gettysburg, but during the entire Civil War. Although he was an aggressive general, some may say to belligerent, he was fighting for the right reasons, as much as that is possible when fighting for the C.S.A. He seemed to be fighting to defend his family and his state of Virginia, not so much the evil institution of slavery. He also seemed to care about his soldier more than any other general in the book. Also, it was a noble thing that he did, surrendering at Appomattox Courthouse. It seemed that he knew the war was lost, and he did not want to have any more soldiers, Union or Confederate to die for the same country.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he felt the Union would be weak in the center since they had been flanked already on the sides. One of the reasons this attack failed is because he was attacking without knowing anything about the Union army where he was attacking. My favorite character would probably be Chamberlain because he was given the order to not retreat under any circumstances when the Confederates attacked Little Round Top and he did just that. Chamberlain did everything in his power to hold the Unions position on the hill and follow orders. He would be considered smart because of his ideas on how to hold the hill and because he went through with them and brave because his ways of holding the hill may not have been what another person would have done in the circumstances.

Without question, my favorite character in Killer Angels is Chamberlain. This is because he is a well-rounded man. He always has his mens' best interest at heart. Also, he believes that people should not be judged by the color of their skin and that all Americans should have rights.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he did not feel good about attacking anywhere else without being defeated. This does not work because of the unknown position of the Union troops. A Confederate told Lee incorrectly so Lee and his troops were not prepared. Lee should have retreated to get more troops so he could fight against this Union army.My favorite character is Longstreet because he is not afraid of war. He is willing to do anything to fight for what he believes in. He is a very deticated and determined man.

Lee ordered the attack because he didnt want to send troops into a battle they might lose. The confederates lose anyway because of unknown union troops. Lee was told wrong about the size of the union army and did not prepare his troops. Lee should have pulled his troops back so he could fight more of the union army. My favorite charecter is chamberlain because he is a good soldier and can handle pressure situations. He isnt afraid to stand up a lead which is huge for the union.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Top because he thought this was were the union was the weakest and thought he had no other choice. The attack failed because the Union had far more men than expected. Lee should have withdrawn from the battle but did not. My favorite character is Chamberlain because of his bravery and strength of heart. He knew how to persuade those who did not want to go into battle and gave everyone the confidence that they could get it done.

The main reason Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top, is because he felt that this was the place where the Union was the weakest. This was an irony, because this was arguably the strongest part of the army. Lee did not know that there were so many troops, because he was misinformed by one of his scouts. The attack wasn’t successful, because his troops were not prepared to fight so many troops from the Union army. Lee would have been better off by sending the troops to a different position and waited another day until the attack. I believe this, because whenever going into a monumental battle like the one he faced you should always double check things. Had he sent several scouts to check Little Round Top he would have had a more accurate count and would have been able to either attack somewhere else or retreat. My favorite character would have to be Chamberlain, because of his persistence and determination style of fighting. He never gave up. If I was to have someone leading my fellow troops and I, I would have picked Chamberlain. Chamberlain was in there until the end, and his courage is what has inspired me.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top, because he believed that the Confederates had the advantage there. The attack was not successful because, the Confederates were unaware of the Union forces, in which they were defeated by. I believe that Lee should have retreated and formed a new position. This may have led to the saving of a lot of Confederate Soldiers. My favorite Character is Chamberlain. He never gives up, no matter how tough things might get. Chamberlain is also a good leader and he seems to make good decisions.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he thought that it was the weakest point for the union. This attacked failed, because it ended up being the strongest point. He was mistaken because his spy Stuart was out joyriding and not looking at the position of the Union army. At this point, Lee should have retreated, but he did not know what was coming up in front of him.
So far, Lawrence Chamberlain is my favorite character. He is my favorite because he is in the army for all of the right reasons, and he cares about his men. He does not want his men to get hurt, but he respects them enough to send them out into combat and fight for their country.

Lee attacked Little Round Top for many reasons. The major reason he attacked was because he thought that Little Round Top would be the weakest point in the Union Army. Because J.E.B Stuart was out on a joy ride, Lee did not get the news that that was the Union Army’s strongest point, and not weakest. This attack was not successful because Lee attacked at the strongest point of the Union army which means he was hit with hard force from the Yankees. At this point, Lee should have retreated because he clearly could not have won the battle. Because Lee chose not to retreat, he lost much of his men. My favorite character in the book is Chamberlain. Not only is he a good general, but he also cares about his men and under no circumstances wants any of his army to get hurt. In my opinion, Chamberlain is the most honorable Civil War general.

This would have away from Washington. My favorite character was Chamberlain. He is my favorite because he is a very determined leader and he believes he can win every battle. He also sees African Americans from their inside and does not judge them simply because they are black

Lee order the attack on Little Round Top because he didn't think the Union would be able to survive their attack. He didnt think their troops were strong enough. Lee believed that if they attacked the right way, the Union forces would be destroyed and forced to retreat or give up. His attack failed, however, because Stuart never informed him about the Union's position. He went into battle blind and was not completely sure about what the outcome would be, though he hoped for a victory. The Union was also set upon a victory so they fought as hard and best as they could and never gave up, and proved, in the end, that they were stronger physically and spiritually than the Confederates. Chamberlain is my favorite character because of his determination and bravery. He puts his men before him and fights until his side achieves victory. He never once gave up and used all his strength in order to win back the country he believed in.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he wanted to push up the hill and force the Union out of Gettysburg. Unfortunately Lee was blind without his cavalry, led by Stuart, and was forced to make a guess at where the enemy was weakest. Conclusively Lee believed that the Union would be expecting a flanking maneuver and concentrated his attack straight down the center of the Union troops. He was surprised to find that by some sick coincidence there were extra troops positioned at the center and Lee was overwhelmed. When Lee started to notice that the attack was failing, he should have taken Longstreet’s previous advice and attacked from the gap on the right. Instead Lee was persistent and lost many lives because of it. My favorite character would have to be Longstreet because despite him being from the South, he understands military tactics and combines that with common sense. Therefore he has more care for the wellbeing of his troops, one of the many traits of a strong leader.

Lee wanted to attack Little Round Top because that is where he believed the Union was weakest. If he could control that area then he would stand a better chance in the battle. Chamberlain was left to defend Little Round Top. The Confederates, however, did not win Little Round Top, because Chamberlain and his men fought well here. Also the confederates did not expect the Union to be waiting for the on the steep hill. My favorite character so far in the book is Chamberlain. He was a great leader to his men in the battle at Little Round Top and throughout all of the book. He never gave up on them and was always there to bring them up. He received the greatest award a commander in the army can receive and he had the respect of his men.

Lee had ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he had been mislead to believe that this was the weakest point in the Union army. Little did Lee know, he had actually attacked the strongest part of the Union army. Instead of retreating as he should have, Lee continued to attack the Yankees, causing him to lose many of his men and a much needed victory for the south. My favorite character in the book is Chamberlain's brother. I admire how he is always true to himself throughout the entire war. He is not afraid to communicate with the prisoners or even slaves. He is kind to all people, and he understands that every man deserves equality and respect. He fought in the war for the right reasons, which I feel is very unique.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he was aware of the Unions disadvantages there. Lee also believed Early and Ewell when they informed him that the left of the hill had been heavily armored during the night, suggesting that Longstreet attack on the hill. By doing this, it would draw the Union away from the left, leaving it open for an attack. The attack was unsuccessful because the Confederates went into the battle with incorrect information. Stuart was responsible for this because he did not report to back Lee about the Union's position. As a result Lee went into the battle not knowing the the Union troops were actually positioned where the Confederates were planning to attack. Lee should have retreated at this point and positioned his troops behind the Union army. My favorite character in the book is Chamberlain because of his determination, courage, and views. Chamberlain believes that the slaves should be freed from slavery and that they should have the same rights as all Americans. He also does not judge them by their skin color. He understands that he is the last line of battle and that he can not surrender, so he fights with his heart.

Lee was a man who often times took the offensive side in the war. At the attack of Little Round Top, Lee ordered his men to attack, without knowing that failure was ahead of him. He thought that by attacking Little ROund Top, the Union would be flanked, but to his surprise, the Union was perfectly positioned for the attack. Lee failed in this battle for a major reason: he had the lower hand. Lee's men were positioned going up the hill and the Union was already on top of the hill, ready for them. My opinion is that Lee should have listened more to Longstreet and cut them off going to Washington. My favorite character is Longstreet. He is my favorite because he was willing to do anything for his army and was a man with a plan for everything.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he believed that it was the Union’s weakest point. The Confederates had many disadvantages towards them, but they still believed they could defeat the Union army. The attack was not successful because of Lee’s lack of knowledge of the Union’s position. Lee was unaware that the left side of the hill was equipped with Union troops. Uniformed of the strength of the Union, the Confederates attacked, not knowing the great position of the Union army. General Lee should have called off the attack and taken a defensive position instead of pushing forward. My character in the book is Chamberlain. He has the right intentions for fighting in the war. His strong sense of morality guides him to make good decisions. He also is an intelligent leader who puts forth his plans and executes it well. He has much determination and courage to fight for what he believes.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round hill because he believed Union forces would be heavier concentrated in other areas leaving the hill a week and vulnerable spot. He then could take the hill and the end of the Union line. However, Lee‘s attack failed because there were a great number Union troops stationed there. Also, the Union’s high ground and the rocky terrain made the uphill attack nearly impossible. At that point Lee should have retreated and accepted defeat of that battle. My favorite character is Chamberlin because of his ability to relate to his soldiers and make reasonable decisions.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he felt that the Union would be weak on the left flank. He believed that if he attacked the south side, then he could take over the hill and the whole Union line would be defeated. The main reason that Lee's plan failed was because Stuart left Lee without any information on the Union's position. If Stuart had followed his orders correctly then Lee would have known that the left flank was not as weak as he thought. On the Union side, Colonal Vincent led 1,350 men to the left flank and told Chamberlain to defend it at all costs. Lee also took too long to gather his troops. If Lee's men had been ready sooner, then the Union men on left would not have had enough men ready and would have been defeated.
My favorite character in the novel is Tom Chamberlain. He is a great symbol of the pain and stress that the Civil War brought on families throughout the U.S. Lawrence Chamberlain has to worry about his brother as well as himself throughout the battles, as well as about what would happen to his mother if something were to happen to both of them. Tom is not afraid to fight and is willing to help his brother at any costs. Through Tom, we are better able to understand the impact the Civil War had on families throughout the united states.

Lee ordered the attack on the Little Round Top because he was under the impression that this was the location in which the Union was its weakest. He underestimated the location that the Union held. Due to the fact that the Union was uphill, they were better able to better defend themselves. The Confederacy, however, was fighting a tiring battle uphill, offering them no protection. Lee also failed to realize the power and force of the Union. However the loss was not entirely the fault of Lee. If Stuart had done his job and reported back, then Lee would have had more information of the exact location of the Union’s army. Taking these aspects into consideration, if I were Lee I would have not attacked from the front, and instead gone around to the back. This way the Union would not have been quite so ready for the attack. Another plan would be to not have taken so much time to make a decision. If Lee had acted sooner, he would have been able to attack before the men from the left made an appearance.
My favorite character so far in the book is Chamberlain. He has been not only a leader to the men fighting for the Union cause, but for America. He had faith in America and the American cause, that all men are created equal and they should therefore be free to live as equals. He was not fighting for power, but for freedom from such power. He constantly believed in his men and never gave up on his cause.

Lee ordered the attack because he felt the army would be weak at Little Round Top. Lee's men would attack the Union from the left thinking they would be undefended. Unfortunately, this tactic did not work. The men found soldiers hiding in peach orchard which caught them off guard. Lee's men found the army was heavily concentrated in this area rather than others. After noticing this disturbing site, Lee realized he should have round up more troops to fight the Union Army instead of expecting what he wanted to happen.

In Killer Angels, Chamberlain is my favorite character. He possesses all of the qualities of a great leader. He gave a moving speech at the beginning of the book to his men. He told them they were to fight for equality of every man around them. He encouraged his men throughout the battle and stuck with them when times got rough. He does not judge the slaves by the color of their skin unlike so many other people

Lee decides to order the attack up Little Round Top because he believes that location to be the weakest point of the Union line. Also, if they could succeed, the Union army would be defenseless as the Confederate army attack on it's flank. The attack was not successful because the Confederate army was left blinded without he help of Stuart who was off joyriding and neglecting his duty a the eyes of the Confederate army. Lee had no knowledge of the position of Union forces without him. In my opinion, Lee should not have been afraid to retreat to better ground. Although the men would not have been happy, the believed in him and the choice woul have ben a much safer decision. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He leads the men with courage and knowledge and he does not act above them. The use of bayonets during the attack on Little Round Top shows that he is not afraid to take risks.

General Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because in doing so he could successfully flank the enemy and gain the best ground in the area. This would allow for an overwhelming victory. The attack's failure was due to the fact that the Union had made preparations in case they were to be flanked, Chaimberlain's brigade. At this point Lee should have gone with Longstreet's plan, using defensive warfare.

My favorite character would have to be Kilrain. He serves as a creative insight on the Irish point of view. I also like him because he tends to have a good sense of humor, making the war seem a little less serious.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he believed the Union was weakest there. He would attack there, weakening that area, allowing him to come in and take the rest of the Union forces. The attack was unsuccessful because Lee rushed into it, not allowing for back-up troops. The Confederates were also left blind, since Stuart had not yet returned to tell of the Union position. The soldiers were also at a disadvantage, having to attack up the hill. Lee should have listened to his officers, who suggested they wait for more troops and take the Union from behind the hill. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he is an honest and courageous man, placing his soldiers before anything else.

There are numerous why Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top. The main one was that he had a feeling that the Union army would not be as concentrated on the flank and if they could take the hill the union army would basically have no defense. Another reason was that this attack, as Lee hoped would, lead them to a victory in the battle, but he was badly mistaken. There are two reasons why this attack was unsuccessful, one because the information that Lee had was unreliable because his eyes on the position of the Union army, Stuart, was joyriding and was not helping the cause at all. Second it took Lee nearly all day to gather the troops to go and attack if they had been organized and attacked earlier they would have taken the hill and eventually the battle.
My favorite character in the book is General Lee because I have always learned about how smart and knowledgeable he was in war strategies and tactics. I think the movie portrays Lee exactly how I imagined him from the book. It takes a truly courageous man to surrender a war that he felt so strongly about because there are too many of his men being killed. He was a true leader and a very intelligent man.

Lee chose to attack at Little Round Point because he believed that was the weakest point of the Union Army. The attack was unsuccessful because Lee was uninformed of the position of the Union troops. The Confederates were literally fighting an uphill battle, working to their disadvantage. If Stuart wouldn’t have been MIA, the Confederates could have lost a lot less people than they did because of the information they would have had. My favorite character of the novel is Chamberlain. His honesty and his morals are known to anyone who has met him, and he takes a stand for what he believes in. His courage inspires all his men to fight, even in the toughest of situations, making him one of the best men in the war.

General Lee had many reason for the direct attack on Little Round Top. He honestly believed that the Union army was weakest at the center. Lee believed this because he thought the Union would put most of their troops in the flanks, to the extreme left and right. General Lee also ordered this attack because if they were able to attain Little Round Top the rebel army would be able to flank the rest of the Union army. The only thing is that Lee's assumption was incorrect. The Union was strongest in the middle. At this point Lee should have called his troops back and retreated south. It would have saved a bulk of his troops. So far in the novel my favorite character is Chamberlain. He knows what must be done to win. He also knows what will happen if the Union does not win the war. Even though he could kill another man he is still a kind person at heart. His victories were major changing points in the war.

Lee ordered the attach on Little Round Top because he saw it as an opportunity to have an easy win. He felt that if they were to remain where they were that their end result would be deafeat. It was an unsuccessful attempt because he was not informed of the Union troops who had been posted on the hill. It was a blind shot since they did not know where the Union army was located. The Union troops were presistent and were determined to have the victory. With the sight of the stationed troops, Lee should have retreated to form and gather a more distinct plan. He should have gathered more men to support them.
My favorite character would be Chamberlain. He was one man who was in the war for the right reasons. In my opinion, I see him as the greatest leader that has been present throughout the novel. He is an inspiration for all the men fighting and spoke about what they were really fighting for. He considered morals in the war and always had a clear, realistic view.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he felt they were unstoppable. He had full confidence in the Rebel army and by taking an offensive role of attack up the hill, something unusually unexpected, he could defeat the Union with ease, catching them in their "weak spot". However, he was not successful in his attack because of his ignorance toward the strength of the Union army. At the point nearing defeat, Lee should have retreated, to rest and save the lives of many Rebel soldiers. My favorite character is Chamberlain. He had so much passion for the right reasons of fighting this Civil War and influenced many soldiers to put their hearts and hopes into the freedom of our country.

Lee ordered the attack at Little Round Top under the assumption gone wrong. Prior to this battle, his assumption was perceived as factual due to blueprints of the foreign ground, the unprepared enemy, and his trust in J.B. Stuart. A weakness was apparent in the Union. A surprise offense would be a feasible victory he thought. As the Confederacy made their way to their destination, unnoticeable to their enemy, Johnston noted that their current path was incorrect. J. B. Stuart neglected his job as the eyes of confederacy and caused the defeat of Lee’s plan. At this point, Lee should have retreated recognizing how mistaken he was of upcoming foreign ground. Lee’s recognition was overthrown by his determination for victory.
Upon the third charge of the rebels in the Battle of Little Round Top, the Union’s prevalent emotion was hopeless exhaustion. A third of the men were already lost. Union general Chamberlain modified the inevitable of the circumstances, “the idea formed” (226). His idea was to charge using bayonets as each soldier’s weapons. Initially, the blatant victorious side was the Confederacy. Chamberlain is the paragon of military brilliance. Chamberlain can be ascribed as my favorite character.

"General, the enemy is there," Lee says to Longstreet. Lee wants to head for the center of the Union line and split the army in half. However Longstreet is concerned because they were unable to take the position earlier at full strength. Lee did not take his words into consideration. Lee was driven to attack the Union force in the center. The attack was not successful because the Union army had a good advantage with the geography. They could look down on the confederate army and see every move and fire their cannons to take them out. Lee should have retreated and not caused so many causalities to his army. The decision to attack was a mistake that forced Lee to withdraw.

Lee ordered the attack because he believed that was where the Union defenses would be the weakest and give him the greatest chance of taking the hill. He thought that Union soldiers would be concentrated on the flanks, and the middle would provide a great route to bring artillery and soldiers through. What he didn’t realize was that the Union army was entrenched deeply into the hill, and, utilizing lots of ammunition, they fought back the Confederates at the middle of the line. It was also unsuccessful because Ewell’s troops had to defend against the attacking Union army. Finally, poor information about Union positions misleads Lee into believing that a frontal assault would be successful. I think Lee should have left a contingency of troops to the middle and attacked up both flanks. The combined force of Ewell’s and his armies would have at least broken the Union line, giving Lee leverage on the entire battle and a chance of taking the hill. My favorite character is General Armistead because of his prior connections with the story. I think the conflict created by him knowing an officer on the Union side brings a true human element to the war, and his death adds a much more emotional side to the story that helps relate it to us.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because it was high ground on the flank of the Union Army. If the Confederates controlled the hill, they would have a clear view of the entire Union Army defenses. Also, if the rebels placed cannons on top of Little Round Top, the whole Union army would be in their range of fire. However, the Union Army was deep in the top of the hill, and had stored up a lot of weapons. The attack was not successful because Union troops conquered the top of the hill before the Confederates. After a heroic defense, the boys in blue counterattacked down Little Round Top and cleared the hill of Confederates. In my opinion on the third day, I think Lee should have attacked Little Round Top again instead of sending Pickett's Charge against the center of the Union defensive line. My favorite character was General Lee because he was a good and clever military strategist. His common sense and logical strategy shown in his actions appealed to me. His command through the entire Civil War gave him prestige over all other contenders for the greatest officer in the Civil War.

General Lee was a true man of the South. They prided themselves on being gentleman in every aspect of the word. For one, Lee thought there was a lack of concentration of troops in the center of the Union army. Lee was off by a long shot however. Another reason calls for a more in depth thinking of Lee's intentions. At this point, Lee was doubtful that the South could win. However, he thought that he must give his full effort and try regardless of the outcome.
Chamberlain is my favortie character because he is considerate for both sides and still is smart. He also became the president of Bowdoin College after the war and this just solidifies his intellegence.

Lee attacked Little Round Top because he thought the Union was weak in the center. Some people may argue that Lee was irrational in his quick decision making at this time. He was even questioned by Longstreet, who was a close friend to Lee. Lee thought that the Confederates must attack if they had any chance to win the war. After the battle, Lee questioned his own decision making and was greatly troubled by the number of troops lost. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he is willing to risk everything to fight for something he strongly believes in. He shares the common value that all men should be free and he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he believed it was the Union's weakest point in their line. By having Little Round Top, the Confederates would have an advantage because they would be able to see formations of the Union army. The attack did not work because Lee was misinformed and there were too many Union soldiers, so Lee's troops could not defeat them. It was mainly Stuart's fault because he did not do his job that Lee assigned him. Lee should have retreated his men, then attacked again on another day with more men and supplies. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he inspires his troops and shows courage by not retreating. He cared about his army and about the Maine men. He did not kill any Maine men who refused to fight, even though he was commanded to kill them. Chamberlain earned the respect of most of his army.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he believed that it was the weakest point of the Union army. With help from General Early and General Ewell, he decides that Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill are too concentrated with men. One reason the attack was unsuccessful was because of the lack of speed with which the troops were gathered. Another reason was the placement of 1350 troops on the left flank which greatly reinforced a hole in the Union line. My favorite character is Kilrain. He is not that heroic type or one that will decide who wins or loses a battle but his constant insight and wisdom help me realize how soldiers fighting in the Civil Way actually felt.

Lee's main reason for attacking Little Round Top was his belief that it was the weakest point of the Union army. Early and Ewell assist Lee in making this decision by informing him that Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill are too concentrated with Union soldiers for a successful attack. Another reason Lee attacked Little Round Top was the reward that came with the taking of it. The Confederates could use their control of the hill to get a view of all Union defenses, and it also would give them the higher ground and better fighting position.
Lee's attack on Little Round Top failed for many reasons. Although the Rebs had been previously very successful, Lee underestimated the fight and skill of the Union soldiers. Also, another key reason for the Confederate defeat was the lack of information due to the joyriding of Jeb Stuart, who did not fulfill his job to accurately convey the position of the Union army. The Confederate troops were not gathered quickly and this allowed 1350 Union soldiers to fill a hole in their flank.
My favorite character thus far is Chamberlain. He does not rush to make irrational decisions can make the decisions necessary to win a battle under pressure, much like he did at Gettysburg. Chamberlain is fighting the war for the respectable reason of the rights of men. He does not fight for nebulous reasons, such as sectional pride or for the political gain that often comes with the participation in war.

His soldiers would not let him back down because he was the unstoppable force, the unbeatable army. Little Round Top was also the very edge of the Union army, so if Lee was able to force Chamberlain to retreat, he could take the Union army from behind where they are more vulnerable. The attack was not successful because of the perseverance of Chamberlain and his men. They were able to find a good spot, dig in, and shoot downhill at the Confederates. At that point, Lee should have accepted his losses, retreated, and regrouped. Also, Lee has to know that the Union army has him on the run, so he needs to take a defensive position rather than attack. My favorite character is Chamberlain because he seems like the most humane person in the army. As a past school teacher, one can really relate to him and it puts into perspective how he is just an ordinary person. Also, he is very brave for his stand and eventual bayonet charge at Little Round Top.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because he felt the confederates could defeat the Union, even with the large disadvantage. He also ordered the attack because he did not feel comfortable attacking from anywhere else. This was a difficult attack becasue of the conditions of the hill, and the fact that the Union was not prepared. The attack failed becasue of the lack of information and preperation. At this time, Lee should have done the right thing and retreated. This could have saved the lives of many soldiers. Lee should have came up with a new plan and possibly attacked from behind instead of the left side.
My favorite character is Chamberlain becasue he was very determined, and a good thinker. His purpose in the war was the rights of men, and he was always focused. Chamberlain has great morals, and shows courage throughout the battle.

Little Round Top was viewed as a good place for Lee to attack. He thought it was good for many reasons. He thought, for one, that it was the Union army's weakest spot, since they would strengthen up their flanks on both ends. The attack wasnt successful because the Union Army then went to the sides, and the Confederates got attacked on both sides. Personally, I'm not really sure what Lee should have done. He should've listened to the others that were telling him not to, and that he should've taken them from behind.
My favorite character is Lawerence Chamberlain. Since the beginning of the book when he gave his speech to the men from the Maine army, I have liked him. He is brave and he shows it. He cares for his army and for his men and always does the right thing no matter what he personally wants.

* You didn't have a spot for the final posting so I am posting it here

Personally, I think the last two paragraphs of the novel are symbolize what a victory for the Union did for the nation. The Thunderstorm isn't washing away rocks and gras; rather, it is washing away the harsh past between the north and south. It is washing away slavery. The rain coming down is purifying the country and allowing it to live in freedom. Finally, by having the next day as the Fourth of July, it signifies that the end of the war is a rebirth for the United States. We gained independence that day in 1776, and slaves ragained independence on that day in 1863.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top because he knew that this was one of the most important battles of the Civil War. If they lost this battle they will not only lose the soldier's morale, but most likely the war. My favorite character is Chamberlain. he shows honor and leadership in the decisions that he makes. He stood with his men and made decisions that would work and keep the men alive.

Lee ordered the attack up Little Round Top because if they flanked one side of it, then they could take the whole Union army from behind. However, this did not work because Chamberlain and his men held off the most vital flank.
My favorite character is Chamberlain. He showed great valor and courage during the battle and ended up earning the Congressional Medal of Honor. He held his flank after about 4 Rebel attacks and then after their all of their ammunition was used he told the men to ready their bayonets and charge down the hill. It was succcessful and possibly ended up winning this battle.

Lee ordered the attack on Little Round Top hill because he felt like if he attacked this was, he would have a better chance of not being defeated. He also felt like the Union troops were weaker on this side, but he was not exactlly sure of this. The attack was a failure because J.E.B Stuart had failed to return with the position of the Union troops. My favorite character in the book is Chamberlain because he is determined and he focuses on the war. Unlike Lee, Chamberlain is relaxed and he can focous more clearly. Chamberlain truely cares about his soliders when the are on the battle feild, and he puts his whole heart into the war.
